Celebrating Your Short-term Wins: 15 minutes to Building Resilience

With everything going on, we need this now more than ever!

John Kotter, in his classic work Leading Change, emphasizes the importance of celebrating short- term wins to any organizational transformation effort. As we are all amid unprecedented change, this is also true on a personal level.

I believe this is more important than ever. WHY?

If you invest a small amount of time in focusing on your “wins,” it will make a difference in your attitude.  Research supports, and my experience as a leadership Coach validates that reflecting on accomplishments strengthens resilience, and it gives us an idea of what we do well.

TRY THIS

Pick a time during the week –I suggest either Thursday or Friday and carve out 15 MINUTES to brainstorm on the accomplishments you have made over the last few days.

Create the list — choose three and reflect on the following questions:

  1. How did it make me feel?
  2. What did the accomplishment mean for myself and others?

Pat, an executive I am working with, emphasized how this exercise not only helped at work, it transferred to her personal life. “Focuses on positive achievement makes a difference in my frame of mind at home with my family. With a focus on my accomplishments, I feel good, allowing me to be present and more engaged.”

What do you think?
